On the 31st December 1981 I was on the platform at Peterborough when the announcement was made "To all Deltics enthusiasts the next train to arrive will be the last Deltic hauled service to York" some enthusiasts said "that’s not true there is still the 16.04 from Kings Cross so stayed behind only to find themselves stranded on Newark station as Deltic 55017 THE DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY was terminated due to a traction motor fault and & there was a broken rail at Barkston. I had boarded the 09.40 kings cross to York hauled behind Deltic 55021 ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDER which was only running on one engine & filmed the entire journey out of the window in the first carriage behind Deltic 55021 ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDER We arrived at York 40 minutes late. On passing Doncaster there was 55010 THE KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BORDERER parked in the reception area. On the 2nd January I decided to return to Claypole to film the Deltic Farewell trip behind Deltic 55015 TULYAR but as I was crossing the field to film & heard the Deltic and so turned on my camera but managed just about to film it from a distance. with this I travelled to York and filmed inside the depot and there was 55021 ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDER 55007 PINZA 55016 GORDON HIGHLANDER 55019 ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER 55004 QUEENS OWN HIGHLANDER On the 2nd January 1982 I was on my way back home and decided to stay outside Doncaster works to see if I could go inside the works to see what Deltics were there and one of the security guards said "Come I will take you down to see them". And so into the works to film and there was Deltic 55018 BALLYMOSS & others too including 55011 THE ROYAL NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS 55005 THE PRINCE OF WALES OWN REGIMENT OF YORKSHIRE Finally the first Deltic I had ever filmed at Kings Cross, Yes 55014 THE DUKE OF WELLINGTONS REGIMENT Strangely enough I received a gift from the regiment in Yorkshire & with amazement on opening the package was Hornby Die cast Deltic called THE DUKE OF WELLINGTONS REGIMENT This Deltic model had been presented to the regiment when the locomotive was named in 1963 at Darlington. The next time I saw any Deltics was at Doncaster in February 1982 as British Rail had a special open day so everyone could see the Deltics for the last time. so off I went with video equipment into Doncaster works. someone said to me "You should make the film available as many would love to see what you have filmed and so I edited this film and made a video called "FAREWELL TO THE DELTIC” As time went by I made another video called "ONE WAY TICKET" based on my filming of 55021 from Peterborough to York on the 31st December 1981. To finance this I sold some of my collectible Wrenn model locomotives that I had collected in the 1970’s That just about raised enough money to buy a video from Carlton Television. To edit the films of these great DELTIC locomotives. |
